This is a day I have been waiting for ever since FOX’s hit sci-fi series The X-Files ended its nine-year run back in 2002. THR is reporting that the show’s creator, Chris Carter, is finally returning to the small screen with a new “female-lead mystery police thriller” with a “supernatural element” to it titled Unique. No word on what network will pick up the show, which is being set up through Media Rights Capital, but my guess is that FOX will be fighting for this one.

Despite being an in-demand director and producer, Carter has pretty much been off the grid since The X-Files ended, with only a brief return to the big screen in 2008 with The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the franchise’s second (and hopefully not final) feature film. After developing such a widely popular TV series that put the FOX network on the map back in the 90s and redefined what could be accomplished on television, it was pretty much inevitable that Carter would return to the small screen.

AMC has announced that, starting October 3rd at 2PM EST, they will be hosting a new 6-episode web series on amctv.com for The Walking Dead leading up to the premiere of Season 2 on October 16th. The series will tell the back story of the “Bicycle Girl” zombie Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) shot in the pilot episode of Season 1. Even though she was a very minor character in the show, her scene is also one of the most memorable, so this is sure to be an adequate way to hold us over until the second season premieres.

In other news, a new Season 2 trailer for The Walking Dead has hit the web. It contains some material we’ve seen before, but the majority of it is brand new. Check it out after the jump!

The original Star Wars films are probably the most influential movies in the history of film-making, and are definitely the most referenced in pop culture. They have formed an incredibly relatable modern myth that movie-goers have fervently latched onto for over 30 years. Since the original film’s conception in 1977, a franchise was created that quickly became a “force” to be reckoned with, through its various popular sequels/prequels, animated series, TV movies, books and countless amounts of collectables. To this day, Star Wars is an unstoppable marketing machine, having birthed into existence the biggest, most passionate fan base on the planet when it comes to movies, and showing absolutely no sign of fading away. Like it or not, Star Wars is forever.

So it goes without saying that, ever since Star Wars creator George Lucas officially announced the release of all all six flims in one Blu-ray Set last year at the Star Wars: Celebration V convention in Orlando, FL, it became the most anticipated Blu-ray box set from that point on – right up to its release a little over a week ago on September 16th (Sept. 12th in the UK). In its first week of release, one million sets were sold around the world, raking in $84 million dollars – making it the bestselling catalog Blu-ray set of all time.

And yet, along with the release of the new set has come a vicious swarm of controversy. Fans are all over the map with this one, varying from embracing all the great special features and accepting the new changes made to the films, to flat out rejecting all of it simply because the original theatrical cuts of the original trilogy are not included. Because of all the insane debating and nitpicking going on over the set, I felt compelled to give my own take on it – after having already viewed what’s on the box set, unlike many who immediately dismissed it without even giving it a fair chance. I can only offer my reasoning behind why I chose to purchase the set, and from there the reader can evaluate (or reevaluate) whether or not this is a set worth owning. Sure, it is not really that important in the grand scheme of things. But, this is a movie website after all, and it’s Star Wars, so the following commentary on this set was pretty much inevitable.

♫ So be good, for goodness sake. WHOOOA! Some movie’s comin’! Some movie’s comin’ to town… ♫

While we all wait to see whether or not Ghostbusters 3 will actually happen (I’ll believe it when I see it), it looks like many of us will be able to re-experience the original film in theaters this October! We’ve been hearing rumblings of the film’s return to the big screen for the last week or so, but now an official press release has been issued for the return of Ghostbusters, playing for three nights this October in select theaters in 2K digital with 5.1 surround sound! Yahoo! Movies has a new featurette for director Shawn Levy‘s upcoming sci-fi robot boxing movie Real Steel, featuring boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard training Hugh Jackman for the film.

The more we see of this production, the more it becomes clear that the film could very well be the surprise hit of the fall movie season. Not only is the film fully utilizing some of the very best in acting and CGI motion capture technology, but it is also going to great lengths to make sure that the film remains true to the spirit of boxing by bringing in the very best in the sport to help make sure every boxing move feels as real and authentic as possible.

If the story is just as top notch as everything else in the movie, inspiring audiences on an emotional level with an uplifting message throughout, Shawn Levy might very well be the next Sam Raimi or Christopher Nolan when it comes to directing sci-fi and fantasy (he’s already lined up to direct an adaptation of Frankenstein for 20th Century Fox). Now this is what I’m talkin’ about! This latest Red Band trailer for director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s The Thing not only clarifies that the film indeed deals with the Norwegian camp shown at the beginning of John Carpenter‘s 1982 film of the same name, but it also displays a lot of quick, yet terrifying cuts of a few scenes from the prequel – featuring killings, alien shapeshifting, and other various creep-out moments. It’s one of those great trailers that moves very quickly at just over a minute long, showing just enough to get you pumped for the film, while at the same time not giving too much away. Sure, this is a prequel, so we do know the ending. But, we have yet to get to know the characters and experience how it all went down. Check out the new trailer below!

Yup, Fall is just around the corner. For many, this means enjoying cooler weather, taking in breathtaking colorful landscapes, going on hay rides, consuming cider and donuts in mass quantities, etc. The season definitely has its fair share of traditional “harvest-centric” activities. But, of course, Halloween is the Fall event people tend to look forward to the most – which, for movie fans, means watching as many horror films as humanly possible through October 31st.

In the spirit of the upcoming horror movie season, the guys from Millennium fan site Back to Frank Black have sent over a recommendation for a new book called Horror Films of the 1990s, written by their good friend and award-winning author John Kenneth Muir. The book is a followup to his other two horror movie books – Horror Films of the 1970s and Horror Films of the 1980s – consisting of 700 pages analyzing over 300 horror films between 1990 and 1999. If you want to brush up on your knowledge of the horror genre as it existed in the 90s, this is definitely the book to get. A little over a year ago, news broke that Nike would be developing the futuristic self-lacing sneakers that Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future Part II, but it was not known at the time when they’d be made available. Well, as of yesterday, the limited edition shoes, called the “Nike Mag” sneakers, officially went up for auction at nikemag.ebay.com to benefit The Michael J. Fox Foundation. However, while Nike filed the Automatic Lacing System patent back in 2009, it appears the current Nike Mag shoes do not actually lace themselves… yet.

Most likely, you won’t be able to afford them, as the price for them is well over $5,000 at this point. But, after the jump, you can read the official press release for the event, as well as watch a great Nike Mag promotional video directed by Back to the Future producer Frank Marshall – which stars NBA Basketball player Kevin Durant, SNL’s Bill Hader, and of course Christopher Lloyd reprising the role of Doctor Emmett L. Brown! The video hints that perhaps the self-lacing mechanism could be put into effect by 2015, which is, of course, when Marty McFly actually obtains the shoes in Back to the Future Part II.

Fanboys around the world can whine all they want every time George Lucas tweaks his Star Wars films. Heck, even I whined a bit last week about Darth Vader’s new dialogue in Return of the Jedi. But, if you really do love Star Wars, is that really going to stop you from experiencing the Saga remastered in High Definition picture and sound in the comfort of your own home when it arrives on Blu-ray next week? Not likely. If you’re a fan, you’ll buy it. We all know you will.

Also, the mere fact that the Star Wars Saga Setcontains over 40 hours of great bonus features will make it even harder to resist. In order to whet your appetite even more, a full list of all 45 deleted scenes that will be included with the set (most of which have never been seen by the general public) has finally made its way online, and you can check it below!

Director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.‘s The Thing, a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 film of the same title, is a movie I have been looking forward to for quite a while. Carpenter’s film was just such a fresh contribution to the sci-fi/horror genre (despite it being a remake of a classic), and so my excitement for the prequel is at an all-time high right now since we’re only a little over a month away from its theatrical debut.

The first trailer finally made its debut this past July, and now the first video clip has popped up online over at MTV, featuring two characters from the film (played by Joel Edgerton and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and a crazy encounter with the “Thing.” Check it out after the jump!
