A little over a year ago, news broke that Nike would be developing the futuristic self-lacing sneakers that Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future Part II, but it was not known at the time when they’d be made available. Well, as of yesterday, the limited edition shoes, called the “Nike Mag” sneakers, officially went up for auction at nikemag.ebay.com to benefit The Michael J. Fox Foundation. However, while Nike filed the Automatic Lacing System patent back in 2009, it appears the current Nike Mag shoes do not actually lace themselves… yet.

Most likely, you won’t be able to afford them, as the price for them is well over $5,000 at this point. But, after the jump, you can read the official press release for the event, as well as watch a great Nike Mag promotional video directed by Back to the Future producer Frank Marshall – which stars NBA Basketball player Kevin Durant, SNL’s Bill Hader, and of course Christopher Lloyd reprising the role of Doctor Emmett L. Brown! The video hints that perhaps the self-lacing mechanism could be put into effect by 2015, which is, of course, when Marty McFly actually obtains the shoes in Back to the Future Part II.

The NIKE MAG is no longer the “greatest shoe never made.” The mythical shoe that originally captured the imagination of audiences in Back to the Future II is being released – and they’re here to help create a future without Parkinson’s disease.

1500 pairs of the 2011 NIKE MAG will be auctioned on eBay with all net proceeds going directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Each day for the duration of the ten-day auction, one hundred and fifty pairs of the 2011 NIKE MAG shoes will be made available via eBay’s Fashion Vault. The auction starts September 8, 8:30PM PST, and will end September 18. Thanks to a previous 50 million dollar match given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, all donations will be matched, effectively doubling the contributions from the auction.
