For the longest time, we’ve only known the titles for director Peter Jackson‘s two Hobbit films as The Hobbit: Part 1 and The Hobbit: Part 2. Now, New Line Cinema and MGM have announced the official titles and release dates for both movies. Hit the jump to know all!

According to ComingSoon.net, the first film, now officially titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, is slated for theatrical release on December 14, 2012. The second film, titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will be released on December 13, 2013.

Anyone who has read the books or even those who have only really seen The Lord of the Rings trilogy will understand just how appropriate these titles are for the films – especially There and Back Again, as this is the title of the book Bilbo Baggins wrote to chronicle his adventures in.

It is also nice to know that they won’t be following in the footsteps of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows films, simply titling them Part 1 and Part 2. Not that using those titles is a bad thing, but it’s been done already. These new titles for The Hobbit films are more unique and relative to the stories they’re telling, and keep them from feeling like they’re copying another fantasy franchise.

The Hobbit films, directed by Peter Jackson, star Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Christopher Lee, Orlando Bloom, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter, Aidan Turner, Peter Hambleton, John Callen, Jed Brophy, Mark Hadlow, Adam Brown, Ian Holm, Lee Pace, Dean O’Gorman and Elijah Wood
