As fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit know, the character of Frodo Baggins isn’t even alive when the story of The Hobbit takes place. But it looks like director Peter Jackson and company have found a way to include him.

Deadline first reported that this might be a possibility, but now TheOneRing.net can confirm that Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings Film Trilogy, will have brief appearances in both of The Hobbit films, directed by Jackson. Read on if you want to be spoiled on just how this will most likely be executed in the films!

From TheOneRing.net:

As readers of “The Hobbit” know, the tale of “The Downfall of The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit or There and Back Again,” are contained in the fictional “Red Book of Westmarch.” In Peter Jackson’s LOTR films, the book is shown on screen and written in by Bilbo and Frodo and handed off to Sam Gamgee. (Not explained on film are Sam’s progeny later having the book and being Wardens of the Westmarch — hence the book’s title.)

The fictional book, and either the telling from it or the reading of it, will establish Frodo in the films experiencing Bilbo’s story. Viewers are to learn the tale of ‘The Hobbit’ as a familiar Frodo gets the tale as well.

So, it’s story time for Frodo Baggins! Him being told the story does make sense, since in the first film of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo is familiar with Bilbo’s finding of the One Ring, although he does not yet know the origin of the Ring until Gandalf finds out and tells him. It also makes sense with him reading it to people, either before The Fellowship of the Ring takes place, or some time before he sails off into the Grey Havens. At this point, we do not know just how exactly this will be executed, but those are a couple of possibilities.

The article does not seem to indicate how much he’ll be in the films, but other sites seem to think his scenes will act as bookends to each film. In other words, they might at least open with Frodo being told (or telling) the story of The Hobbit, and perhaps each film will end that way as well.

According to TheOneRing.net, the only other actor from Lord of the Rings Trilogy actually confirmed to be appearing in at least one of The Hobbit films is Cate Blanchett, who played Galadriel. Hugo Weaving (Elrond), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) are all supposedly in negotiations to reprise their roles as well.

Ian Holm will not be reprising his role as Bilbo, since the character will be much younger here. Instead the role will be played by British actor Martin Freeman (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Shaun of the Dead).
