The nominees for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony are quite exciting, particularly because this is the first time 10 nominees are allowed for the “Best Picture” category. Personally, I’m predicting that Avatar will be this year’s The Return of the King at the Oscars. It will most likely be a “clean sweep” for all the categories it is nominated in. Besides the Visual Effects category, the Best Director and Best Picture Oscars are pretty much a given, since James Cameron won Best Director at the Golden Globes and Avatar won for Best Motion Picture (Drama). Historically speaking, the winners for those categories at the Golden Globes go on to win their equivalents at the Oscars (although that’s not always the case).
However, since they have allowed more pictures to be nominated this year, there are many movies that were not up for a Golden Globe that are nominated for Oscars. So, technically there is a chance that something other than Avatar will win Best Picture. I’m personally rooting for District 9, although I would be surprised if it takes the Oscar away from Avatar. Even though I didn’t like Avatar as much as everyone else seems to, that film is an unstoppable hype machine and I highly doubt that it will lose in the categories it is nominated in.
We will soon see, when the 82nd Academy Awards air on March 7th at 8/5P on ABC.
