So apparently some people who have experienced the spectacular 3-D world of James Cameron’s Avatar “have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora,” according to CNN‘s report from last week.

WHAT?!!!!

Here is an excerpt from the article from one person claiming depression:

“Ever since I went to see ‘Avatar’ I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na’vi made me want to be one of them. I can’t stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it,” Mike posted. “I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in ‘Avatar.’ “

I realize I’m a little late to the punch, but this has got to be the most hilarious thing I have ever heard in regards to seeing a movie. On the fan forum website “Avatar Forums,” a thread entitled “Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible,” has received over 1,000 posts from people claiming depression.

Now, whether or not these people are clinically depressed is a whole other topic altogether. Personally, I think these people, if anything are just saddened at most that their everyday lives aren’t nearly as thrilling as what they experienced in Avatar. Well, that’s fantasy for you. Get over it.

For me, this can be said about most sci-fi and fantasy films I’ve watched. Remember that little film trilogy called The Lord of the Rings? I have fond memories of wishing that I could live in places from the films like Rivendale, Lothlorien, Hobbiton, etc. The locations in those films literally took my breath away (for me, much more than anything in Avatar).

Saying that, I would never claim depression from the realization that where I live isn’t nearly as thrilling as those places. The same goes with Avatar. While I was impressed with the incredibly realistic visuals, in the end it is still a movie and it is absolutely pathetic to get depressed that it isn’t real.

Come on people! The movie wasn’t that good, let alone good enough to justify being depressed over it – even if the visuals are outstanding. Gees, what has our world come to? If you’re one of these people who are depressed from seeing Avatar, or any other movie for that matter, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Heheh, that rant was fun.
