X-Files Revival

After being off the air for almost fourteen years, The X-Files will finally return to television with a two-night premiere starting January 24th at 10 PM EST/7 PM PST on Fox (Mondays at 8 PM after that). The hype has been enormous for this six-episode event, much more than for their second feature film back in 2008 (the advent of social media has changed things a bit since then).

Originally, we never though The X-Files would return to television, and fans were actually holding out hope for a third feature film. We still are. Well today, via THR, series creator Chris Carter gives us hope yet again, revealing that he had indeed originally wrote a script for a third film, should 20th Century Fox ever want one. Looks like our suspicions were true after all!

Via THR:

“I actually wrote a third movie, just because I was interested in the idea of where that might go,” said Carter, who then thought of repurposing the script for the series. “I let my wife read the third movie, and she said ‘I think not for television.'”

Of course, the article also points out that the hurdle is the very busy schedules of X-Files stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Both are still working actors, staring in numerous TV series, which is why the new season of The X-Files will only be six episodes. So making any more episodes or movies is asking a lot from the two of them.

When asked about it, Carter stated that right now, he’s more interested in returning for more episodes of the show. But that’s not to say the third film couldn’t still happen. As the article states, he did not re-purpose the script for television, so it’s still on the table. Of course, the question remains if the story he wrote for the movie fits with what he has now written for the show. My guess is that if the third movie does ever happen, Carter might have to re-purpose the script for the film to fit with the series.

If the new show is a hit, we most certainly will get more episodes. If it continues to be a hit with further seasons, we may just have a chance at getting at least one more movie. If the plan is to make it anything resembling the greatness that was the first film, embodying the spirit of The X-Files at its greatest, well, this fan certainly hopes it happens. In the meantime, I am more than grateful we’re getting six more chapters in The X-Files mythos, even if that’s all we ever get.
