Blair Witch Project

Yup, Fall is just around the corner. For many, this means enjoying cooler weather, taking in breathtaking colorful landscapes, going on hay rides, consuming cider and donuts in mass quantities, etc. The season definitely has its fair share of traditional “harvest-centric” activities. But, of course, Halloween is the Fall event people tend to look forward to the most – which, for movie fans, means watching as many horror films as humanly possible through October 31st.

In the spirit of the upcoming horror movie season, the guys from Millennium fan site Back to Frank Black have sent over a recommendation for a new book called Horror Films of the 1990s, written by their good friend and award-winning author John Kenneth Muir. The book is a followup to his other two horror movie books – Horror Films of the 1970s and Horror Films of the 1980s – consisting of 700 pages analyzing over 300 horror films between 1990 and 1999. If you want to brush up on your knowledge of the horror genre as it existed in the 90s, this is definitely the book to get. Read on to find out a bit more about the book and author John Kenneth Muir!

About Horror Films of the 1990s (via McFarland Publishing):

This detailed filmography surveys more than 300 horror films that were released in the years 1990 through 1999. The horror genreā€™s trends, cliches and patterns of the decade are connected to social and cultural phenomena, such as Y2K fears and the Los Angeles Riots. Among the popular forms of this period were films about serial killers, aliens, conspiracies, and sinister “interlopers,” new monsters who shambled their way into the lives of everyday people to wreak havoc on screen.

About Author John Kenneth Muir (via Amazon.com):

John Kenneth Muir is the award-winning author of over 20 books in the fields of film & television, with an accent on horror & sci-fi. John has been described as one of the horror genre’s “most widely read critics” by Rue Morgue Magazine, and as an “accomplished film journalist” by Comic Buyer’s Guide. His director books include profiles of John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Christopher Guest, Tobe Hooper, Mira Nair, Sam Raimi, and Kevin Smith. John has twice won a Booklist Editor’s Choice citation (for Horror Films of the 1970s and Terror Television). John is also the creator of the award-nominated web series, The House Between, and in 2009 John’s blog, Reflections of Film/TV was named one of the “top 1000” film study blogs on the Net. In 2010, John appears in the documentary Nightmares in Red, White and Blue.

The book is said to have been made available as of September 15th, but there seems to be some sort of delay at the moment. The book should be available through McFarland Publishing as well as Amazon.com some time this fall. Stay tuned as more details emerge.

Thanks to Back to Frank Black for the recommendation!

Update: James McLean from Back to Frank Black says that he found out from John Kenneth Muir that the book missed the September 15th release date, but that it is pending a release “literally any day,” and is definitely available for pre-order now!
