After many rumors of who might play the title role in The First Avenger: Captain America, it is now confirmed that Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Sunshine) has been hired for the role!

Heat Vision also said that “the actor has not only accepted Marvel’s offer, first detailed on Friday, but that the dealmaking moved so fast it’s now all about dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.” Evans will apparently be signed on for up to three Captain America movies, The Avengers movies and also several other Marvel films. Marvelous!

Say what you will about the Fantastic Four films (I liked them), but I always though Chris Evans was great in those movies as Johnny Storm. I also enjoyed his role in Danny Boyle’s film Sunshine quite a bit. So judging from those two roles alone, I’d say he’s perfect to play Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America.

The First Avenger: Captain America is slated to be released in theaters nationwide July 22, 2011 and will be directed by Joe Johnston.

Sadly the name Joe Johnston still gives me pause. As much as I enjoyed it in the 90’s, the last the we need in the middle of this era of wonderfully thought-provoking superhero movies is another ‘Rocketeer.’ Though if you enjoyed ‘Fantastic Four,’ this take may just be right up your alley. ;-)

I didn’t like “Jurassic Park III” that much, but I enjoyed “The Wolfman,” and I’ve heard “October Sky” was pretty good too. So, I have faith that he’d make a decent “Captain America” movie.
