A couple of weeks ago, it was rumored that Armored director Nimród Antal was Robert Rodriguez’s choice to direct Predators. Well, Aint It Cool News has confirmed through a Q&A session with Rodriguez himself that Antal is indeed his pick for the reboot.

Armored is scheduled for theatrical release December 4th of this year. Rodriguez supposedly got a sneek peek at the film eariler this year and made his decision on Antal for the director of Predators based off of what he saw in that film. Here’s what he had to say to Harry Knowles of Aint It Cool News:

When I saw Armored, I could tell he’s also great with action and has a keen eye for casting. He reminded me of Quentin [Tarantino] with how he was able to work with a group of very strong, singular actor talents and make it look effortless. I know he’ll be able to get the most out of what we want to be an outstanding cast. We really want to go with a character driven action movie, because that’s what we all remember about the original Predator, and we want to take it even further with this.

When asked what the story for Predators would be like, he had this to say:

I can’t go too much into the story right now, because we’re still writing. But it still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning. Aliens was a different take on the Alien idea, and an original movie in its own right, and that’s what we want to do with this.

I am so stoked about this reboot of Predator. Rodriguez co-wrote the screenplay for Predators with Alex Litvak, and will also be producing it. He has said in the past that he will be very hands on with the production. I’m assuming he is not directing because he is too busy with Machete and Sin City 2 and 3. Hopefully this Antal guy will turn out to be the best thing that has ever happened to the Predator franchise, because it has been struggling to stay alive ever since Predator 2. I have not seen any of this guy’s movies, so I might be checking out Armored later this year.

Predators is scheduled for theatrical release July 7, 2010. Click here to read the rest of the interview.
