Iron Man 2

When the first Iron Man film was released, I had little expectations going in. The previews looked okay, but I knew pretty much nothing about the comic it was based on. Needless to say, Iron Man was the biggest surprise of 2008, at least for me anyway, which meant any subsequent sequels that would follow would have some big shoes to fill. After seeing Iron Man 2, I can safely say that the shoe fits.

The Wolfman 2010

“Even a man who is pure in heart
and says his prayers by night,
may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
and the autumn moon is bright.”

Recited at the beginning of the film, this famous poem (from the original 1941 film, The Wolf Man) sums up in a nutshell just what we are in for in the remake of this classic tale of lycanthropy: We’re finally going to get an updated version of the film from 1941 for modern audiences, but one that is meant to be a love letter to the fans of Universal’s original much-loved monster.

Let me just start off by saying that I have never “read” the 9-10 sentence book Where the Wild Things Are, so I do not have a real good idea of how close this new film by Spike Jonze is to the original story. What I do know is that this movie perfectly captures what it is like to be a kid that perhaps doesn’t have a lot of friends, has some trouble at home and simply wants to escape for a while.

I will preface this review by being completely honest. Quentin Tarantino’s style of film making has never really been my thing. His movies have always come off as either pretentious or simply overly-stylized to me – sort of style for style’s sake. They always came off like Tarantino is just full of himself as an artistic film maker.

Not much is coming to mind concerning my opinion is about this film, except that I absolutely loved it! It’s dark, it’s gutsy and it has characters you care about. It is unafraid to step outside the norm of your typical alien invasion film.

It also has some serious balls.

As I was leaving the theater, I thought to myself, “Man, that was depressing.” But I was not thinking the movie was bad. On the contrary, I was contemplating just how dark Harry Potter’s story has to get before things go well for him. He has never had a good life since we began this journey with him in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and this film only proves that point all the more.

Transformers 2

Two years ago, we witnessed a well done, “check your brain at the door” live-action movie based on the original Transformers cartoons from the 1980s directed by Michael Bay and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Today, they bring us the sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and it is bigger, louder and much more intense than the last film. For some people this is a warm welcome. For others, they may have a headache at the end of this two and a half hour-long popcorn movie.

In the previous installment of the Terminator franchise, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, we found out that the deeds of Sarah and John Connor that were accomplished in T2 did not stop Judgement Day but rather postponed it. Judgement Day was inevitable, and we saw Skynet become self-aware and begin destroying the planet. The moment this was shown to us is the moment that decided the fate of future Terminator movies. We were now at war with the machines. The future had begun, and we could finally have something totally different for the franchise.

star trek 2009

Written by: Dan Geer

So here we are, approximately seven years since we have seen a new Star Trek movie. In 2002, Star Trek: Nemesis was released with a mediocre response from critics and fans alike (I personally thought it was decent, actually). It was considered a poor ending to the Next Generation series and was thought to have put the last nail in the coffin on the much beloved Star Trek franchise as a whole.
