Andy-Serkis_Caesar

Andy Serkis (Gollum from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) delivered an amazing CGI motion-capture performance as Caesar in this summer’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was a surprisingly great film altogether. When it made a whopping $453 million worldwide, 20th Century Fox knew that a sequel was in order, and that they needed to get Serkis to lead the ape revolt into future sequels, as he had originally only signed on for the first film.

Today, Fox’s wish became a reality, as Deadline is reporting that Andy Serkis has indeed officially signed on for further sequels. Read on for more!

Spielberg

Indiana Jones fans have been divided over his latest adventure in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Some enjoyed it overall (like myself), while others couldn’t get past things like Mutt swinging with monkeys, CGI gophers, or Indiana Jones surviving a nuclear blast. Either way, it seems like the general consensus among fans is that perhaps Indy needs one more outing, whether it’d simply be for the fun of it, or to right a few wrongs.

Empire recently sat down with Spielberg to ask for an update on Indy 5, and also got the chance to hear his thoughts on some of the critiques Crystal Skull has received since it first hit theaters in 2008. Hit the jump to find out what he had to say!

Twilight Zone

Matt Reeves, director of Cloverfield and Let Me In, has been hired by Warner Brothers to direct the film version of The Twilight Zone that Appian Way, Leonardo Dicaprio’s film company, has been working to get off the ground for a few years now. Apparently, other well-known directors were on Warner Brothers’ shortlist to direct, such as Christopher Nolan and Alfonso Cuaron, but Reeves apparently ended up being their final choice. Dicaprio, as well as his Appian Way partners, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Michael Ireland, are set to produce, with Warner Bros’ Matt Cherniss overseeing the project as executive producer. Phantom Menace 3-D_cropped

Last March, Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace would be converted to 3-D and released on February 10th, 2012 (providing that it proves successful enough at the box office, the remaining films will also be converted to 3-D and released some time later). Starting next week on October 21st, Star Wars fans can check out a glimpse of it in a new trailer attached to the 3-D release of Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers!

Also, while it is not really news to people who watched Season 3 of Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it has been made truly official that Darth Maul, the Sith apprentice that supposedly met his demise at the hand of Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace, will be resurrected for an appearance in The Clone Wars next spring! Hit the jump for details on his return, as well as a look at the new poster for Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 3-D!

i-frankenstein_aaron-eckhart

Last March, it was reported that Stuart Beattie (co-writer of 30 Days of Night and the Pirates of the Caribbean films) was chosen to direct the upcoming film adaptation of Underworld writer Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel, I, Frankenstein – which is set to start filming in January. At the time, one big question remained: Just who exactly would play the Frankenstein Monster?

Today, Deadline is reporting that Aaron Eckhart, who famously played Harvey Dent/Two-Face in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, has indeed landed the title role! Read on for more info!

mortal_kombat_legacy_scorpion_subzero

It looks like director Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat web series has paid off. It appears that his first unauthorized short film, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, as well as its corresponding web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, inadvertently acted as a kind of audition for directing a feature film reboot of the franchise (which first started out as a video game series, followed by a couple of disappointing feature films in the 90s). News hit yesterday via Deadline that New Line Cinema loved what Kevin Tancharoen did with the series, and ended up recruiting him, along with the original writer of the short film and web series, Oren Uziel for a new feature film. Hit the jump for more info, and to watch the Episode 9 of Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy featuring Cyrax and Sektor (which I somehow completely missed when it debuted online)!

Chris Carter

This is a day I have been waiting for ever since FOX’s hit sci-fi series The X-Files ended its nine-year run back in 2002. THR is reporting that the show’s creator, Chris Carter, is finally returning to the small screen with a new “female-lead mystery police thriller” with a “supernatural element” to it titled Unique. No word on what network will pick up the show, which is being set up through Media Rights Capital, but my guess is that FOX will be fighting for this one.

Despite being an in-demand director and producer, Carter has pretty much been off the grid since The X-Files ended, with only a brief return to the big screen in 2008 with The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the franchise’s second (and hopefully not final) feature film. After developing such a widely popular TV series that put the FOX network on the map back in the 90s and redefined what could be accomplished on television, it was pretty much inevitable that Carter would return to the small screen.

For a great refresher on the career of Chris Carter, hit the jump to watch his extensive interview with the Archive of American Television!

Walking Dead

AMC has announced that, starting October 3rd at 2PM EST, they will be hosting a new 6-episode web series on amctv.com for The Walking Dead leading up to the premiere of Season 2 on October 16th. The series will tell the back story of the “Bicycle Girl” zombie Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) shot in the pilot episode of Season 1. Even though she was a very minor character in the show, her scene is also one of the most memorable, so this is sure to be an adequate way to hold us over until the second season premieres.

In other news, a new Season 2 trailer for The Walking Dead has hit the web. It contains some material we’ve seen before, but the majority of it is brand new. Check it out after the jump!
