Are you the type of person who absolutely loves movies series like Star Wars or James Bond and have always wanted to do a marathon of sorts but never had the will power to sit through so many films in a row? Well, as it turns out, there is a group of movie marathoners (about 20-30 people) based out of L.A. that have sat through 4 different movies series thus far, during which they film the whole marathon, rate the films on a scale of 0-10, and neatly present it all in time-lapsed video.
So far, they have gone through the James Bond, Star Wars, Star Trek and Batman series. Watching these guys in time-lapsed video going through so many series makes my Lord of the Rings marathons look like a walk in the park! Check out these amazing videos after the jump!

A new clip has emerged for director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s The Thing that helps establish the fact that it is a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 film, also called The Thing. The scene shows that the American character, Kate Lloyd (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) struggles with the language barrier between her and the Norwegian scientists she meets up with in Antarctica – the same Norwegians whose maimed corpses we see at the beginning of Carpenter’s film. No gore or close-ups of “The Thing” here, but it is an intense scene nonetheless and I think the quality of the acting here shows that the film is aiming for more than just cheap thrills. It looks like director Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat web series has paid off. It appears that his first unauthorized short film, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, as well as its corresponding web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, inadvertently acted as a kind of audition for directing a feature film reboot of the franchise (which first started out as a video game series, followed by a couple of disappointing feature films in the 90s). News hit yesterday via Deadline that New Line Cinema loved what Kevin Tancharoen did with the series, and ended up recruiting him, along with the original writer of the short film and web series, Oren Uziel for a new feature film. Hit the jump for more info, and to watch the Episode 9 of Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy featuring Cyrax and Sektor (which I somehow completely missed when it debuted online)!

This is a day I have been waiting for ever since FOX’s hit sci-fi series The X-Files ended its nine-year run back in 2002. THR is reporting that the show’s creator, Chris Carter, is finally returning to the small screen with a new “female-lead mystery police thriller” with a “supernatural element” to it titled Unique. No word on what network will pick up the show, which is being set up through Media Rights Capital, but my guess is that FOX will be fighting for this one.
Despite being an in-demand director and producer, Carter has pretty much been off the grid since The X-Files ended, with only a brief return to the big screen in 2008 with The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the franchise’s second (and hopefully not final) feature film. After developing such a widely popular TV series that put the FOX network on the map back in the 90s and redefined what could be accomplished on television, it was pretty much inevitable that Carter would return to the small screen.
For a great refresher on the career of Chris Carter, hit the jump to watch his extensive interview with the Archive of American Television!

Yahoo! Movies has a new featurette for director Shawn Levy’s upcoming sci-fi robot boxing movie Real Steel, featuring boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard training Hugh Jackman for the film.
The more we see of this production, the more it becomes clear that the film could very well be the surprise hit of the fall movie season. Not only is the film fully utilizing some of the very best in acting and CGI motion capture technology, but it is also going to great lengths to make sure that the film remains true to the spirit of boxing by bringing in the very best in the sport to help make sure every boxing move feels as real and authentic as possible.
If the story is just as top notch as everything else in the movie, inspiring audiences on an emotional level with an uplifting message throughout, Shawn Levy might very well be the next Sam Raimi or Christopher Nolan when it comes to directing sci-fi and fantasy (he’s already lined up to direct an adaptation of Frankenstein for 20th Century Fox). We’ll certainly find out come October 7th when the film hits theaters. Hit the jump to watch the featurette!

A little over a year ago, news broke that Nike would be developing the futuristic self-lacing sneakers that Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future Part II, but it was not known at the time when they’d be made available. Well, as of yesterday, the limited edition shoes, called the “Nike Mag” sneakers, officially went up for auction at nikemag.ebay.com to benefit The Michael J. Fox Foundation. However, while Nike filed the Automatic Lacing System patent back in 2009, it appears the current Nike Mag shoes do not actually lace themselves… yet.
Most likely, you won’t be able to afford them, as the price for them is well over $5,000 at this point. But, after the jump, you can read the official press release for the event, as well as watch a great Nike Mag promotional video directed by Back to the Future producer Frank Marshall - which stars NBA Basketball player Kevin Durant, SNL’s Bill Hader, and of course Christopher Lloyd reprising the role of Doctor Emmett L. Brown! The video hints that perhaps the self-lacing mechanism could be put into effect by 2015, which is, of course, when Marty McFly actually obtains the shoes in Back to the Future Part II.

Director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s The Thing, a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 film of the same title, is a movie I have been looking forward to for quite a while. Carpenter’s film was just such a fresh contribution to the sci-fi/horror genre (despite it being a remake of a classic), and so my excitement for the prequel is at an all-time high right now since we’re only a little over a month away from its theatrical debut.
The first trailer finally made its debut this past July, and now the first video clip has popped up online over at MTV, featuring two characters from the film (played by Joel Edgerton and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and a crazy encounter with the “Thing.” Check it out after the jump!

Whenever the Star Wars films get released on the latest home video format, fans have naturally come to expect various tweaks to be done to the films ever since the Special Editions of the Original Trilogy were released in 1997. They have been divided ever since on whether or not George Lucas should have even changed anything in the first place. For me personally, I fall somewhere in the middle, where I understand (and even love) some of the tweaks, and disagree with a few others.
It has already been confirmed that Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace will have a new CGI Yoda on the upcoming Blu-ray set in place of the original puppet to better align with the digital Yoda in Episodes II and III (it appears that most fans hated that particular puppet anyway), and that other minor changes have been made to help the films look better. But the most recent change that has got fans in an uproar is a new line given to Darth Vader right before he throws Emperor Palpatine down the shaft at the end of Return of the Jedi. I resisted posting this until Lucasfilm confirmed it, but today they have made it official that Vader indeed says, “Noooooo!” at that moment (much like in Revenge of the Sith but slightly different). A couple of other controversial tweaks have been confirmed as well. Hit the jump to watch clips of the changes that have leaked online.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, written by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Troy Nixey, is arriving in theaters tomorrow to help kick-start the typical fall horror season a bit early. The film, starring Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes, has been getting some positive buzz, with people saying it is one of the scariest movies to be made in quite a while (Update: I saw the film on opening day and, while it’s creepy at certain points in the film, I personally did not find it to be all that scary).
But what people may not know is that the film is based on a TV movie from 1973 with the same title starring Kim Darby and Jim Hutton, which has been recently remastered for DVD. FEARnet has posted a clip from the original film (via Warner Brothers) called “Scare Her” and, just from watching this clip alone, I can definitely see why Guillermo del Toro says it is the scariest TV movie he has ever seen. Hit the jump to check it out!

The summer movie season may be just about over, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for one more potential blockbuster this year with director Shawn Levy’s Real Steel, coming to theaters this October.
The film stars Hugh Jackman as a washed-up fighter who lives in a world where boxing has been taken over by robots. It looks like it will be a blast to watch, but at the same time contain a heartwarming father-son story at its core that will certainly help viewers invest emotionally in what’s going on. Check out the new “Main Event” featurette that just debuted for the film after the jump!
