TRON 3

Just when it all seemed like it was coming together for Tron 3 (rumored to be titled Tron: Ascension), The Hollywood Reporter broke the news yesterday that the sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy just got axed by Disney. Read on for more!

According to CinemaBlend, the sequel was already well in the works and was thought to start filming some time later this year, with Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde all set to return. In a recent interview with Collider, Wilde claimed the story would focus heavily on her character Quorra, since she was originally a program that escaped The Grid and made it back to the real world with Sam Flynn (Hedlund) at the end of Tron: Legacy – essentially making Quorra a real flesh and blood person. The film would address how her character would adjust to that drastic change in her life.

The story was certainly coming together, and the key players in making the film work were on board. There were even rumblings that the producers of Tron 3 were trying to get Suicide Squad‘s Jared Leto on board for a role in the film as well (those talks apparently never resulted in a deal). Tron: Legacy even made a decent profit, grossing $400 million globally with only a $170 million budget. However, it was receiving mixed reviews at best.

Personally, I loved Tron: Legacy. While it wasn’t a perfect film, the story was still fun, the effects were outstanding, and having Daft Punk score the film was a stroke of genius. This is really disappointing news for me. However, that does not mean the film will never get made. Remember, it took nearly three decades for Tron: Legacy to finally hit theaters (although, I really hope we don’t have to wait that long for a third Tron). Who knows? Maybe Disney is just pulling the plug for now, and that perhaps one day down the road they can be convinced of producing the next Tron.

In the meantime, we’ll all just have to speculate on what happened to Quorra and Sam after Legacy.
