This past May, it was revealed that Dave Filoni, supervising director of the recently canceled Star Wars: The Clone Wars, was hard at work at Lucasfilm as executive producer on an all-new CG-animated series called Star Wars Rebels, which will focus on the time period between Star Wars: Episodes III & IV and show the rise of the Empire and the elimination of the remaining Jedi Knights scattered throughout the galaxy. Needless to say, Star Wars fans are eager for details, almost as much as for anything regarding J.J. Abrams’  upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII.

As it turns out, Filoni revealed quite  a bit this weekend at New York Comic-Con, not only giving us more details about the series, but also our first glimpse of a main villain he calls “The Inquisitor,” whom Darth Vader himself appoints to help hunt down the remaining Jedi Knights. Hit the jump for the full image, details on the series, and a behind-the-scenes video!

The LA Times tells us that Star Wars Rebels will take place 14 years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Filoni also goes on to elaborate how Rebels will differ from Star Wars: The Clone Wars:

“‘Rebels’ will be different from ‘The Clone Wars’ in a couple ways, and one is the decision to stick with one story and one main group of characters. We wanted fans to get to know the new characters and what they are fighting for. Each episode has its own unique story, while still fitting into the much larger picture of what is going on in the “Star Wars” universe. ‘Rebels’ will tell the story of a group of characters, in this way it is more like the original trilogy which followed Han, Luke and Leia, where the prequels showed us the grand scale and political as well as personal.”

Between having Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Wiesman executive producing, and various members of The Clone Wars crew hard at work on this, I’d say Rebels is shaping up to really be something special for not only fans of The Clone Wars, but also fans that have grown up with Star Wars from the start. It really looks like they are taking things back to what originally made Star Wars so cool in the first place, by giving us time to relate to a main core of characters and setting the story in a time period that so closely resembles the era of Star Wars that made so many fall in love with the series in the first place.
