Warner Brothers has finally released a second trailer for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and there is definitely plenty to behold for the fans. While we do get to wander the paths of Mirkwood, visit Laketown, and of course see the Lonely Mountain again, we don’t get to see as much as you might think in this trailer, which is probably a good thing. This new trailer definitely emphasizes that Legolas (Orlando Bloom) has a pretty big role in the film, and lets us in on his relationship (or lack thereof) with Tauriel, played by Evangeline Lily. Also, while we actually see less of Smaug the dragon than we did in the first trailer, this time we really get to witness Benadict Cumberbatch as the voice of the dragon, which, after watching this trailer, is sure to blow us all away. Overall, this second chapter in The Hobbit Trilogy seems to have a much darker tone to it than An Unexpected Journey, which is fine by me.

Official Synopsis:

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

While this looks absolutely terrific, I am a bit concerned about giving Legolas such a prominent role. Sure, he’s a fan favorite, but he wasn’t in the book, and I am not sure he was included in the portion of The Return of the King appendices that deals with the timeline of The Hobbit. We just know he probably would’ve been in Mirkwood during this time, since Thranduil, Elvenking of Mirkwood (who was in The Hobbit novel), is his father. But I wouldn’t expect much more than a small cameo based on this information. It seems that Legolas has a bigger role solely because he was so beloved in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, which, depending on how they handle it, could either be really cool or very bad. I really hope they don’t screw this up!

The Hobbit Trilogy is directed by Peter Jackson, and written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson. The Desolation of Smaug will be released on December 13th, followed by There and Back Again on December 17, 2014.
