Independence Day

Director Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day has to be one of the landmark films of my youth. While not a perfect film, not much can top the memory of going to the movies in the summer of 1996 and witnessing city-sized alien spacecraft blowing up buildings and mankind fighting back. To this day, I still think actor Bill Pullman’s presidential speech to the aerial combat fighters in the third act of the film is one of the best on screen speeches in the history of cinema. Still gives me chills. Overall, the movie has stood the test of time.

So it pleases this blogger to know that 20th Century Fox is re-releasing the film in 3D on July 3rd of next year in the U.S. Many have speculated that this could be to test the waters and see if there might be an audience for the long-rumored sequels, although actor Will Smith currently doesn’t think it will happen. Stereo 3D, the same company that post-converted Titanic to 3D, will be handling the post-converting of Independence Day. While the 3D is not essential for me to want to check out the film in theaters, it’ll certainly be interesting to see how it turns out in the third dimension. Not only that, but many who are old enough to remember that July 4th weekend of ’96 can now relive it once again.

In addition to this announcement, Fox has also announced U.S. release dates for three other highly-anticipated films. Hit the jump to find out more!

Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s sci-fi novel Robopocalypse, Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel, and X-Men: First Class 2 have all been given release dates. Robopocalypse has been pushed back from July 3rd of next year (presumably to highlight the 3D re-release of Independence Day, although it may not help much, now that The Lone Ranger will be released then as well) all the way to April 25, 2014. The Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel, now officially titled Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, hits theaters May 23rd, and X-Men: First Class 2 on July 18, 2014.
