Ever since the first official photo of Anne Hathaway‘s Catwoman costume for The Dark Knight Rises was posted online, fans everywhere had to chime in with their take on it. Some loved it, while others dismissed it as terrible. I believe I read an opinion somewhere describing it as looking like something out of Stephen SommersG.I. Joe film.

In particular, MTV had sort of a “meh” opinion on the costume, basically indicating they weren’t all that impressed. So when Anne Hathaway sat down with MTV in a recent interview, she made sure to let everyone know why the costume is going to be cool and that MTV‘s “meh” was premature. Hit the jump to watch a brief clip of the interview where she addresses fan reactions!

Not entirely sure of what she means by “you’ve only seen about a 10th of what that suit can do.” Not sure we’ve seen it do anything besides provide skin-tight clothing for Anne Hathaway.

Jokes aside, what Hathaway is saying here is that the fans must make sure they take the photo into the proper context – and she is totally right. Often times, fans immediately jump to conclusions, and oftentimes those conclusions are negative. We haven’t seen the finished film yet, and rumor has it that the photo didn’t even show us the full costume. When you break it all down, the character of Catwoman will manifest through Christopher Nolan‘s direction and Hathaway‘s performance. The costume is just a look that needs personality and direction behind it that we just haven’t seen yet. Hopefully when more trailers for The Dark Knight Rises are released, we’ll get a better “idea” of what Catwoman will be like in the film. But even then, true legitimate judgement must be reserved for when we actually see the finished film.

The Dark Knight Rises, directed by Christopher Nolan, stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Josh Pence and Tom Hardy. It hits theaters nationwide July 20, 2012.
