Alien

It appears that just about everything we thought we knew about Ridley Scott‘s supposed Alien prequel(s) is now inaccurate. While Scott‘s project started out as a prequel to the film Alien (Scott directed the original film from 1979) – the story has evolved into something more original ever since Lost writer Damon Lindelof came on board. The project, now officially titled Prometheus, has virtually nothing to do with the Alien universe any longer, according to Deadline. Read on to find out more!

Says Ridley Scott about Prometheus:

“While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.”

Lindelof had this to add:

“In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley‘s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects.”

Now, I am someone who was completely open to this originally being an Alien prequel, simply because Scott is on board to direct. However, because he is such a talented and creative director, this takes me back to the early days of Blade Runner, where he had a great vision for an original story (albeit inspired by Fritz Lang‘s Metropolis and based on the Philip K. Dick story) that wasn’t a sequel, prequel or reboot. It was just a great piece of science fiction that gained legendary cult status. Wouldn’t it be cool if they were on to something like this again?

Whatever the case, I am sure this will be one cool film. What do you think?

Prometheus has been officially announced for release March 9th, 2012, starring Noomi Rapace. Head on over to Deadline to read the rest of the article.
