Star Wars Blu Ray

Last August at Star Wars Celebration V, Star Wars creator George Lucas announced that all six Star Wars films will be released on Blu-ray in Fall 2011. Well, looks like it’ll actually be a littler earlier, as 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm have announced that the films will arrive in September on Blu-ray “in three distinct sets to meet the needs of every Star Wars fan.” Hit the jump for more info and the official trailer for the hi-def sets!

From StarWars.com:

The most anticipated Blu-ray release ever — the Star Wars Saga — emerges from light speed this September 2011. For the first time, all six of George Lucas’ epic films (Episodes I-VI) are united in one complete set. Fans worldwide are able to pre-order now with online retailers.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release Star Wars in three distinct sets to meet the needs of every Star Wars fan:

  • Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray (9-disc Set includes all six films)
  • Star Wars: Prequel Blu-ray Trilogy (3-disc set includes Episodes I-III)
  • Star Wars: Original Blu-ray Trilogy (3-disc set includes Episodes IV-VI)

Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray will feature all six live-action Star Wars feature films utilizing the highest possible picture and audio presentation, along with three additional discs and more than 30 hours of extensive special features including never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes, an exploration of the exclusive Star Wars archives, and much more.

Head on over to StarWars.com for the rest of the official press release as well as the full hi-def trailer.

Most of this isn’t anything we haven’t already heard, but it was not previously known that there will be three sets to choose from, and that only the Saga set will contain the 3 discs of special features.

Of course the needs of “every Star Wars fan” will not be met since there are still people out there that would like to have the original cuts of the Original Trilogy remastered in hi-def for this release, and it appears they will not be included here.

While I agree that that would be great, it’s not going to happen. I say, let’s just be happy that these fine films will be released in the greatest format to date (with over 30 hours of incredible features on the Saga set) and quit complaining already!

(I’ve included a rough copy of one of the deleted scenes that will be included with this release after the trailer)

While the Saga set is retailed at $139.99, and the Original and Prequel Trilogy sets at $69.99, they are available for pre-order on Amazon.com at $89.99 and $44.99 respectively. Order yours today!
