Recently, director Barry Sonnenfeld told Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411 that Men in Black 3D (yes, you read that correctly) is ready to roll, with Will Smith already signed on to reprise his role as “Agent J.” He also said that while Tommy Lee Jones has not yet formally signed on, he has agreed to come back for the third film as well.
No word on whether MIB 3D will actually be filmed in 3D, or converted from 2D to 3D in post-production. It comes as no surprise that this film will be going the way many other special effects films have since Avatar’s success made dollar signs shine in the eyeballs of studio execs. It seems everywhere I look another 3D film is being released, with most of them being converted in post-production to try and make more of a profit. Hopefully MIB 3D will actually be shot in 3D and be worth the ticket price.
Concerning Will Smith reprising his role in the film, it looks to me like the other film he wanted to tackle, The City that Sailed will be set aside for now since he is officially signed on for the third installment in the Men in Black series. Perhaps he’ll film it after filming wraps for MIB 3?

I hope it’s filmed in 3D too…I wasn’t real impressed with the Clash of the Titans 3D, do you know if that was done post production? But at the same time I don’t really like when they do gimmicky things in a 3D movie just to show off what they can do…like in Journey to the Center of the Earth with Brendon Fraiser

Clash of the Titans was converted in post-production. I saw it as well, just to see if perhaps the 3D might be good. It wasn’t bad, but I didn’t think it was worth the price of admission. I want things popping out AT me, and there was nothing like that going on in the 3D version.
I do agree that 3D can be a gimmick. But I have to admit, it is very intriguing to think that aliens could be reaching out to grab me or something in the new MIB movie!
