So a recent explosion of X-Files “news” has hit the web in the last couple of days. Basically, Gillian Anderson was at the Sarajevo Film Festival this past Thursday during their “Coffee With…” session commenting on the possibility of doing a third X-Files movie. Find out what she said after the jump!

Here is what she had to say about her possible return to the franchise and the status of a third movie:

“Of course I would accept to play in a new (third) ‘X-Files’ movie… They’ve talked about doing it in 2012. I think there were some discussions about that.”

As a die-hard X-Files fan, this is not really news to me, but for some reason this news has exploded all over the web. I think that it is because of the fact that the second X-Files movie, I Want to Believe, didn’t do that well at the box office. But we know from a past interview with Fox Chairman Tom Rothman over at IESB that even though it didn’t do that well, it is really up to X-Files creator Chris Carter, and actors David Duchovony and Gillian Anderson if they want to do another one. And we already know that all three of them do want to make the third.

Recently on his blog, producer Frank Spotnitz commented on this whole thing by saying:

I’m afraid I have no news to report – other than our continuing desire to make a third film if there’s an audience for it.”

Bloody Disgusting had this to add:

“Something we can add to the story is there is talk of a REBOOT. Are you surprised? Nothing is set in stone, all should be taken as rumor until confirmed.”

This is the only website I know that has said they have heard talk of a reboot. What that means, I don’t know. I find it difficult to believe that they would just start over and re-introduce Mulder and Scully, whether with Duchovony and Anderson or with new actors. We know from what both Chris Carter and producer Frank Spotnitz have in the past that if they do a third movie that it would go back to the alien mythology plot line from the series and first movie and deal with the main story arc of alien colonization of earth in 2012 at the end of the Mayan calendar. So it would make sense that a third movie would come out by 2012. But never have they expressed rebooting, replacing actors, etc.

So I would take Anderson’s comments as a good possibility but not an official announcement. As far as the reboot theory, I would say it is complete nonsense. Carter and Spotnitz have not only said where they want to go with the third movie if it gets greenlit, but they love this series and these characters too much to do something like that to the fans. They know very well that they owe it to X-Philes to wrap up the mythology.

As a bonus, BBC Radio interviewed Tiffany Devol from X-FilesNews.com about the news. You can listen below:
